Archangel Michael — Nursery Icon

Archangel Michael — Nursery Icon

This icon of Saint Archangel Michael presents the great protector and defender of the faithful with clarity, stillness, and strength. Depicted frontally in the traditional Byzantine manner, the Archangel holds a staff and orb—symbols of divine authority and vigilance—while his calm gaze conveys both authority and peace.

What distinguishes this piece is its unique mosaic-style paint application, developed by the artist, Zoran Rnjak. Rather than a smooth, flat surface, the image is built through countless small, deliberate paint impressions—each mark functioning like a tessera in a mosaic. This method creates a subtle vibration across the surface, catching light in a way that gives the icon a living presence. The result is both painterly and architectural: a surface that feels constructed, luminous, and enduring.

Faithfully reproduced from the artist’s original work, the icon is giclée printed on canvas and archivally mounted onto a solid hardwood block. Each piece is individually cut, prepared, and finished by hand. The wood is treated with a natural Danish oil, enhancing its warmth and grain, while ‘Jesus Christ Conquers’ mark is hand-burned into the back using pyrography, reinforcing its authenticity as a crafted object.

Designed intentionally for nursery and child-centered spaces, this icon offers more than decoration—it becomes a quiet companion. Archangel Michael, long recognized in both sacred tradition and broader cultural imagination as a protector against harm, introduces a sense of watchfulness and reassurance. In a child’s room, this presence translates into something deeply human: protection, order, and calm strength.
